Bulgaria's ban on smoking

Recently there have been rumblings that the Bulgarian parliament was seeking to amend the smoking ban which has been in full force for a year, and the restaurant/bar and club trade have been complaining about the loss of trade. The ban was introduced in a country where smoking is still widespread ergo lots of people will not go to places where they cannot smoke.

Last week the ban was upheld overwhelmingly. However I have started to notice that many places are ignoring the ban and allowing people to smoke.Whether this is the start of some samizdat movement I know not, but I think it reflects a desire to make money and if they need to flout the law they will do it.

Any one noticed such things where you are ?.

Snow Snow and more Snow

The weather forecast just said windy, but this morning we have had a lot of snow.My friends have had no power in the Apart Hotel that they live in near Kavarna, and have just decamped to a hotel. If your only method of heating is reliant on electricity such outages can be unpleasant if not downright dangerous.

The forecast for Christmas Day night is minus 13, which is unusually cold for this region.I don't think it has been this cold for about 5 years.Let us hope that this is not a harbinger of worse things to come.

How is it in your part of Bulgaria ?.

Weather Update

Woke up to a chilly -8C, as dawn broke.Allegedly my air con unit works up to minus 25C, and I think I January we will find out if it does !.

It was a beautiful sunrise this morning, despite the cold it seemed to have a warming red glow about it.It is particularly beautiful to see the sun rise over the sea. There is a strange elemental purity.

Today I will venture out for a short while, but luckily no strong wind. The wind chill is the thing that exacerbates the cold, without it it's just cold, with it it's freezing !.

The one thing we don't have is snow, most of the rest of Bulgaria has it, but on the coast we normally have none till Christmas.

Going to sign off now.Hope you all have a great day !.

December Musings

Well, Winter is coming (if that is not a cliche from 'Game of Thrones') but it is still sunny, last night there was a lot of rain, and my roof is leaking slightly. We seemed to have had a very windy night, the other night, and I think some damage was done, but maybe it was just the wrong kind of rain !.

Balchik is very quiet, only at the weekends do the restaurants get busy and then only some of them.On Thursday evening the Christmas lights will be turned on in Varna, so that is one for the diary.

On the Blogging front, we have passed the 60,000 page views milestone with quite busy daily traffic.

As I have mentioned before we want news and views from around Bulgaria, so if you have items please post them as comment here.

Hi everybody,

I hope you are enjoying our news service so far, after 3 years online. We are proud of our net ranking which is growing and growing, but also of our  loyal readership. Please join to get a free daily bulletin of our posts.

On the news front we have the fiasco of the Markovska judge, who was obviously rumbled by the EU as dodgy but not, apparently, by anybody in the Bulgarian parliament.

There is loads of other stuff, plus our commercial website www.gobg.co.uk which has just been updated with the latest property information.

Read and enjoy, but also please contribute.

Sofia

I have just returned from a business trip to Sofia.I have been there often, and love exploring each time.I enjoy it around Vitosha Boulevard, a little like Bulgaria's answer to Oxford Street. There are lots of bars and restaurants at reasonable prices.I travelled on the Metro which is great, modern, and cheap at 1 lev a journey.

Please be careful with the taxi's, one of our party was charged 80lv for a journey which really cost about 12lv. It is best to call a taxi .You can dial OKSupertrans and they have English speaking operators.

There are also a wide range of hotels starting from 30lv up to 250lv.

One thing I do find about Sofia is that it is very tired looking, and really 3 days is the maximum I would recommend spending there before you run out of things to do/see.

All Quiet on the Balchik Front

This time of year always has the feeling of an anti-climax about it. The middle of September always produces a sudden drop in tourists, the shops shut up and, despite the fact that it is still warm and sunny here, there is a distinct feeling that winter is approaching.

Most of the restaurants and bars on the seafront stay open all year so that is good news, but how they survive this period is a bit of a mystery to me.The more ingenious survive by pulling in some regional trade for festivals and conferences, whilst the majority basically subsist.

There is still no news on the supposed Balchik airport development, and I would suggest nothing will happen.Anybody who believes that Bulgaria's Black Sea coast will suddenly take off again is being delusional. We should just enjoy it for what it is ..our own idyll of choice.

Weekend in Ruse

We have just returned from a wonderful weekend in Ruse. There were many highlights, but our visit to the Opera was memorable. The Opera House itself is a 19th century gem.Inside its' glory is a little faded, but it has a wonderful gallery and a balcony.'The Magic Flute' is an opera I have never seen before, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.I think the cast were very pleased that the audience was nearly full for once.

I can also thoroughly recommend the Hotel Cosmopolitan which had first class facilities and excellent food.

At last some justice for the families of the victims. After years of smears and lies the truth has come out.I hope they throw the book at the South Yorkshire Police for a massive cover up, as well as the FA, the City Council and the football club for a ruinous attitude to public safety.

In addition I hope there is compensation for the families who have spent thousands on fighting this case, whilst the Police etc are funded by public money !.

Pound hits 2.45 lv !

Due to the continuing instability in the Eurozone, the pound has become a so called safe haven, and is now 20% higher than two years ago.It is also at its highest point since approximately 2008.

Since Greece is almost certain to leave the Euro, be prepared for further sharp rises for the pound, my prediction is that it will be at 2.55 by July. Two years ago it was 2.03 lv to £1.

This is great news for British tourists and investors as your pound goes much further here.

British people are now very worried about travelling to Greece, in case the currency collapses overnight and they are stranded with Euro's they cannot spend. It is likely that the Euro exit will be announced over a weekend (when the banks are closed) and there will be extra bank holidays on the following two days.At this point all cash machines will be switched off and bureau de change are besieged.A nightmare scenario.

Bulgaria maybe is not as beautiful as Greece, but at least it's safe !.

No company creation to buy property in Bulgaria for EU citizens

To those of you who missed it, the requirement to have a company to buy a house or land in Bulgaria has been abolished. At last this ridiculous impediment to property ownership has been placed in the dustbin and it represents a significant move to revive the housing market. The requirement still applies if you are purchasing agricultural land or if you are non-EU nationals.
